The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to contest specific calls made by the official, following the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
