The Substance Film
The filmmaker's daring satire examines the tyranny of female beauty along with the feared consequences of growing older. The veteran actress offers an inspired performance in the role of Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to presenting an aerobics show on TV. Forced aside thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome process titled "The Substance". This generates a new version of herself named Sue, culminating in a steadily more parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This classic whodunit thriller stars the talented actress in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for some time off from covering international wars to embark on a luxury cruise alongside an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, and other affluent passengers. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and everyone insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Streaming currently, Netflix
Presence Film
Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities through this nifty supernatural story filmed completely from the perspective of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it seems protective of her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to visit a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by government spies to investigate the potential kingpin, Cage's unconventional method proves useful. This Saturday, evening, Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has made the children anxious. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye begin capitalizing on the people's religious faith. It's a riot of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though Chastain manages to depict Tammy Faye in a likable light. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel
