Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
