Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
